High school students in red graduation caps and gowns cheer

Martinsville City Public Schools is proud to announce that all schools in the district have been reaccredited for the 2024-2025 school year! This achievement is a reflection of our continued commitment to academic excellence, college and career readiness, and community growth.

Superintendent Dr. Zeb Talley expressed his gratitude for the efforts of the entire school community. "Our students and teachers continue to work hard academically, thus enhancing our community while striving for excellence. I would like to thank our parents and community supporters for outstanding support and resources. We will continue to strive for superior achievement!"

In addition to all schools being reaccredited, data available on the VDOE's School Quality Profiles shows that our schools and students are excelling on many fronts. Our district continues to maintais one of the highest on-time graduation rates in the region. Additionally, Martinsville High School leads all other area high schools with 44% of its high school students enrolled in Advanced Placement (AP) courses. This far exceeds the second-highest rate of 11.7%. MHS also boasts the highest percentage of students participating in dual enrollment programs and Governor’s School.

These advanced classes are more than an opportunity for our students to experience the rigors of college coursework- it's also a chance for our students to earn college credit! Thanks to a partnership with Patrick & Henry Community College, MHS AP students are concurrently enrolled at P&HCC, while students in the Accelerated College Education (ACE) and Governor’s School programs are dual enrolled at the college. Because of that partnership, students who pass their courses earn college credit without the need to take an AP exam. And Governor's School and ACE Academy students can even earn their associate's degree before graduating from high school!

Dr. Angilee Downing, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction, shared her excitement about the district’s academic progress. "We continue our focus on the growth of our community by striving to ensure our students are college and career ready. Moving forward, we are excited about our focus on literacy and our work around the Virginia Literacy Act. I owe all of this to the hard work of our students and staff and the support of our families and community members."

In addition to academic success, MCPS students are excelling in career and technical education (CTE). Students continue to earn high numbers of industry certifications and CTE credentials, while making significant strides in entrepreneurship and other career-focused opportunities through the CTE department.

With a firm commitment to preparing students for the future, Martinsville City Public Schools is excited about the achievements of the past year and looks forward to building on this momentum in the 2024-2025 school year.
